Small group of correspondence, 1870-1874 (19 letters); manuscripts, proofs, and final printed versions of various scientific papers and addresses; printed syllabuses of his early lecture courses as professor at Oxford; laboratory notebooks of some of his earliest analytical work in Liebig's laboratory, c. 1845; laboratory notebook of 'graphite experiments' in his own private laboratory in London, 1853; 5 other notebooks containing laboratory notes, mathematical calculations, and draft writings. Correspondents include Thomas Andrews (the Irish chemist and physicist), William F. Donkin jnr., Frederick J. Hicks, Arthur Hobhouse (Lord Hobhouse), A. W. von Hofmann, Henry J. S. Smith, and Charles R. A. Wright.

Chemist and mathematician; Fellow of the Royal Society; Professor of Chemistry, 1855-1872. Having graduated from Oxford in mathematics, he studied chemistry privately, and worked for a while (c. 1845) under Liebig at Giessen. He discovered graphite and formulated a mathematical alternative to the atomic theory, termed 'chemical calculus,' which was ingenious but wrong. From the description of Papers, ca. 1845-1880.
